Made Great in the Wait

"31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. " Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)

Last week I was "blessed"  with the opportunity to wait.  We waited at the hospital for 12 hours.  I waited at a doctor's office, and I waited at a pharmacy.  At one point, I had to stifle a giggle so as not to be rude.  Waiting people are not pretty people.

When the wait first begins, people sit upright in their chair, looking fresh and thumbing through glossy magazines, engaging in light banter with other co-waiters.  But in time, the posture slumps, the magazine is tossed aside and conversation becomes less lively.  At the end of waiting, many people slide down in their chair- if their waiting is long, they may lay down right in a public place!  In time their eyes are glazed over.  Dead eyes.  Their faces, a grimace.  Their eyes resolute. "I will wait forever" becomes their refrain.

As I observed - and participated in- this phenomena, I realized how I must look in the Spirit most of the time.  In God's economy, we are always in the waiting room for one reason or a another.  We wait for direction, we wait for provision, we wait for opportunity, we wait for others to surrender to God.  In the waiting room our character is molded and shaped.  The rough edges are sanded off.  If there is any impatience in us, the wait will show it.  If there is any depth of character or abiding faith, it too, will have a chance to show forth while in the wait.

I am not to the place in life that I thought I would be. At this age, I thought I would already "be" what I dreamed of being.  Vocation/career wise.  But instead, I realize I am still in the motion of becoming.  Instead of looking ahead to a retirement in 20 years, I am hoping to have reached the place in ministry that I have been waiting 20 years to see.  Yes, 20 long years of waiting .  Of showing hope, impatience, and at times, apathy.

Waiting upon the Lord can be as hard as waiting in a doctor's office for service, or a hospital lobby for news.  But if we are plugged in to Him during the wait, our strength can renew.  We can garner strength to mount up with wings of eagles, to soar above the problem, to gain a loftier, God-sized view.  We can sit aright in our chair.  We can begin to walk briskly and find our feet breaking into a run.  As He infuses us with His power.  We can wait with grace.  Our waiting does not have to be in vain.  It can be fruitful.  Advantageous.  For not only us, but for those in our sphere of influence.
As we waited in different waiting areas, each time, as we set up camp, we quickly identified the areas of the room near an outlet.  We're a modern family!  We all have cell phones, tablets and even laptops to plug in.  We came with our batteries charged.  But we know the wait can wax long.  For hours. For eons.  So, we must be near a power source!

As you wait, are you plugged into THE power source?  Are you remaining steadfast in prayer?  Is the Word your firm foundation?  If not, you will likely faint in the wait.  Charge up, my friend!  You were made to soar!  You were created to run!

Dear God, I pray, today for those who are waiting.  Renew, refresh, and recharge their souls.  Let them sense your nearness.  Enable them to find purpose in the wait.  And peace.  As we wait for Your imminent return, let us wait expectantly and not be lulled to sleep by the much waiting.  Infuse us with your power and your Spirit.  In Jesus' mighty name, I pray!  Amen.

  Ps 37:39

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord ;

He is their strength in the time of trouble.

NKJV

Life can be tiring. Take yesterday for instance.  I was wearing all of my "hats" that day.  I was trying to finish my billable contacts  for my social work job, typing my case notes, washing clothes, tidying the house, planning for an upcoming ministry event this Saturday night; one on Sunday morning; one on Sunday night; some quarterly scheduling for church, paying bills and running errands.   This necessitated a trip to a town 45 minutes away.  One of my kids (who, because I am merciful, shall remain nameless) was out of sorts all day. I was constantly counseling, threatening, warning and disciplining.  Life can be tiring!  By the end of the day all of this blog I could eek out was two sentences.

The frustrations of life can not only leave you tired,  but weak as well.  It can zap our strength and leave us feeling weary and unmotivated.   I am so  grateful  that my salvation does not depend upon me.  God is my strength in times of trouble.

He reveals His strength to me in so many ways.  In innumerable ways, really.  When the harried(ness) of my day could cause me to have a total fit of carnality, I feel Him holding me together.  When I am at the end of myself, He is there!  When I no longer know which end is up, He  is there.  In Him, and Him alone, I live, move and have by being.

On the way home from such a day, I turned out some praise music and immediately, I felt Him rain down His love and compassion on me.  Like a frantic child being soothed by a parent, I felt the Lord holding me near and assuring me that everything was going to be alright.  We expect the Lord to show up on our behalf when we are facing major life catastrophes.  But I am grateful that He offers His strength on days that it is just the little things that cause me to fray!

Dear Lord, You are so good to me!  I thank you and praise You that You are faithful to me, even when I am too stressed to feel You.  Thank you for the strength You give in troubled times.  In Jesus' Name. Amen.

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

  "The Lord  will give strength to His people;

The Lord  will bless His people with peace. " Ps . 29:11 (NKJV)

It was a balmy spring evening in 1991.  I was being honored as my due date for my firstborn drew near.  A group of about 40 ladies were gathered around me in a circle, watching me as I opened each present.  Sleepers, blankets, diapers, booties, so much  great stuff that I needed.  And then I opened the one bag... In it was a beautiful peach crocheted...??? Heaven help!  I  did not recognize the item at all.  It was certainly beautiful, and I quickly schooled my  features, "oohed, ahhhed" and asked if it was handmade.  The lady proudly admitted that she had, in fact made it.  I had hoped her description would move on to tell what the item was.  But alas, that was not the case.  I believe that she likely found out about the shower and at the last minute grabbed something out of her "last minute gift" closet.  I later determined that it was probably a table topper.  Nevertheless, I felt I had succeeded in appearing duly pleased with her thoughtful gift.  But when the film was developed (yes it was the last century) there is it was in full-color glory.  My face caught in bewilderment as I held it up in front of me.  Busted!  Anyone could see I had no idea what the gift was!

I  love that the Lord never gives us dorky gifts that we cannot enjoy.  He gives us just what we need, just when we have need of it.  He gives strength to His people and blesses them with peace.  These are timeless classics.  Perennial gifts.  No matter how much strength or peace we presently have, we need an ongoing supply to sustain us.

When life throws us curveballs, we can lose our peace as our mind runs amuck with fear and worry.  Walking in the Spirit allows us to quickly adjust and regain our peace and confidence that the Lord has it under control.  His strength is like that as well.  As soon as we need more to meet a demand, He liberally infuses us with more.

This verse has no hidden nuggets of truth.  It is just straightforward facts about our kingdom benefits.  But on days like today, I need the reminder that He will meet my need.  His blessings are perfect and sure.

Dear God, thank you for the gift of peace and of your strength.  Please increase my peace to meet the challenges that have met me today. I need your strength, to keep me from fainting in the fight.   In Jesus' Name.  Amen.

Receiving the Strength & Peace of God

"The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace." Psalm 29:11

Have you ever been around an extremely generous person?  There have been times people have lavished me with so much generosity that it became uncomfortable and downright embarrassing.  That is the way the Lord generously pours His love and gifts on us!

This verse talks about two important things that  the Lord pours out in our life: 1) strength and 2)peace.  There is seldom a day that goes by that I do not rely on the strength of the Lord to resist temptation, to stand during a trial or to not give up hope about a promise the Lord has given me.  The strength of my moral fiber or character is tenuous at best.  But he has unlimited power to enable us  to walk in the Spirit and meet the demands of living in a sin-filled world.

Thank God for His gift of peace!  So much of life makes no sense to me, tries my faith and leaves me riddled with anxiety.  But the supernatural commodity of peace enables me to see the storm, but not feels the effects of it.

After a season of intense work-related stress, I can see how Christ's peace was multiplied to me to see me through the tensest of days.  But I also appreciate how after the storm had past He renewed my reserves of peace.  Today I spent hours at the beach, taking in the sounds of the surf, observing the undaunted peace of  the birds.  It is a reminder that He is watching over all creation, providing for it just as He does for his children.

Dear Lord, help me to receive your strength and peace.  Help me to walk in the Spirit and not be moved by the stressors that life throws my way, in Jesus' Name.  Amen.

Help Wanted

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.  My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.”

Psalm 28:7

There are days that I just go bankrupt- I have no strength within myself.  I am so grateful that when I hit a wall He is there to give me what I need.  His strength is not based on the limitations of humanity, but rather, is defined by his supernatural power and strength.
This verse goes on to acknowledge the Lord as my shield.  He takes the bullets for me.  He stands between me and my enemy.  He blocks me from the fiery darts of the enemy and preserves my life, my heart, my mind and my soul. I am so glad that in Him I can find insulation from the storms in this life.
He is your strength and shield as well.  And as you commit your heart to trust in Him, you will find that you are helped.  Whatever kind of help you need- finances; friendship; healing; love; acceptance; favor; He has unlimited help to offer to any situation in life that you may be facing.
With the knowledge that He is all those things to us- strength, shield and help; we can experience the joy in our hearts that the psalmist is describing.  And ultimately we find ourselves bursting forth with praise to such a loving and intimate God.
Dear Lord, thank you for the words penned in this verse.  Thank you that you are my strength, protector and help.  Lord I need you to come  on the scene in the situations that are heavy on my heart.  Help my heart to trust in you all the more.  In Jesus’ Name I pray.  Amen.
