Living in the Now

“Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…”

Philippians 3:13

Do you find yourself looking back to the good old days, wishing you could rewind time?  Do you find yourself looking ahead to the future when things will be all you hope for? When you get married, when you have children, when your children leave home, when you retire?
In this passage, the Apostle Paul was choosing to forget his past and push toward his future in Christ. Yesterday, whether it was blissful or awful, is gone.  There is no going back in time.  Far too many Christians waste their today, regretting their choices of yesterday.  If you have repented to God for sin, and have done your best to make restitution to people you have wronged, you can forget about yesterday.  God does not remember it against you and neither should you.
We have to let go of yesterday in order to embrace today.  Today is the day of God’s favor, today is the day of salvation.  Today is the day to live up to all Christ has called you to be.
People who are forward thinking tend to be more positive and accomplish more in life.  It is a good thing to plan for your future, to work toward goals and make the most of every opportunity.  In Christ we have to live in the now, looking forward to our future.  Today is a gift you have been given.  Celebrate today and seize the opportunities given you.
Dear Lord, help me to let go of yesterday- the precious memories and the horrible mistakes.  Help me live in today and always look forward to the future you have planned for me.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
