Work-God's Style

Eph 6:6

Don't just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ's servants doing what God wants you to do.

(THE MESSAGE)

"Good enough."  "Give it a lick and a promise."   "The bare bones."  These are all sayings that have to do with doing less than excellent.  They are all about doing as little as you can get by with, failing to give it your all.

Our society is filled with people who do a sub-par job.  I well remember how my spiritual fruit was squeezed when we were building our home.  Gone are the days where the average person truly lets their word be their bond and strives to do an over and above job. People cut corners and hedge their estimates.  People make promises that they never intend to fulfill.

As Christians, that should not be true of us.  Whether we are writing a paper for school, completing a project at work or cleaning the toilet at church, it should all be done heartily.  As unto the Lord.  It is God's will that His children be a people of excellence and integrity.  I can almost hear you saying, "They don't pay me enough to do a better job."   But the truth of the matter is, we do not work for man. Not really.  We are the servants of the Lord Jesus Christ, and as such, we answer to Him. Coming in late,  leaving early, pocketing a paperclip...   None of this escapes His notice. We should earn the money that our boss gives us- and then some.

Sadly, this lack of integrity can also bleed over into our church work.  Sunday school teachers coming in late, with a lesson that they intend to "just wing it".  Special singers singing a solo with no practice with the musicians.   Youth sponsors who back out at the last minute for an outing.  All of these are examples of compromise in Christian service.  In the Old Testament, worshipers were commanded to bring the unblemished sacrifice.  The best from their flock.  God still requires the best from us.  Especially in the House of God!  We all have bad weeks.  We are all human and fall short.  But our aim, our goal, must be to please Him- to do everything in a way that blesses the heart of God.

Are you giving your work your all?  Have you become burned out and complacent?  It is time to stir yourself up in the Lord, and approach your God-appointed duties with fresh enthusiasm and gusto.

Dear Lord, forgive me for the areas that I do not do my work as unto You.  Help me to fulfill all of my roles with integrity and excellence that would cause you to be pleased. In Jesus' Name.  Amen.
